A little over a month ago Black Lapel invited me to hang out during their f/w 2016 photo shoot; which was to start in Manhattan and venture over into parts of Brooklyn. I’ve been following and working with the brand nearly since their inception so I thought it a good opportunity to see what they have in store for the coming season. Even though make no mistake, we are still in the heat of summer; I for one haven’t starting thinking about fall and winter clothes yet.
The shoot was inspired by geometric architectural designs. So you will see a few elements of that reflected in some of the scenery, such as the Barclays Center. That theme is carried a bit in the collection, primarily with the windowpane fabrics you will see, the blue windowpane on blue flannel perhaps being my favorite fabric from the collection. Although the burgundy tux, which can also be made as a suit, is also quite strong.
The day was en enjoyable one, broken up by a few conversations with various park rangers and security guards who were curious what was going on. And then of course there were the dogs.
And there was always time for coffee…
Two models were featured in the shoot. And then there was a plethora of support staff (make up, hair, stylists etc), which was interesting to see all the parts at work and then fall into place for a look.
Touching on a few thoughts on style and dressing well I’d like to share a few thoughts. Blue and burgundy is one of my favorite combinations. In fact, burgundy goes equally well with blues and grays. If you don’t have a burgundy tie or pocket square in your wardrobe I highly advise acquiring some. And of course, you can never go wrong with a white pocket square.
Opting for a turtleneck (sometimes referred to as a rollneck) sweater is a great way to change things up from a shirt and tie. It is a more casual look and when done right, can be dashing.
New outerwear on the way, one of the fabrics is a nice heavy brown wool.Aforementioned blue windowpane…
The suits were great, but this may be my favorite non-menswear shot from the day. Or at least my favorite non-menswear shot. It is the southside of the Barclays Center, which I had not seen before in person, it is a beautiful structure. The rust color of the exterior contrasts excellently with the blue and white of the sky.
To check out the new collection, which launched earlier this week, you may view it here. As always, please sound off in the comments with thoughts, ideas and questions.
